Jacksonville Vermont Real Estate

Jacksonville is a small, quaint village with-in the town of Whitingham. There is a well known general store specializing in local wines, fabulous meats, and semi-prepared meals. The village is home to The North River Winery, a beautiful stream and small waterfall. With an eclectic shop named The Blue Heron for some great gifts Jacksonville is a nice stop on a visit to Vermont.

A ten minute ride gets you to Lake Whitingham (aka: Harriman Reservoir.) The largest body of water solely in the state of Vermont. This 11 mile long lake dog-legs back and forth and is a pristine waterway. With the first 50 feet above the high water mark set aside as a “no development zone,” this lake is fairly private and perfect for swimming, kayaking, power boating, sailing, fishing and this author’s favorite activity, water skiing/wake boarding. It is also used for ice fishing, cross country skiing and snowmobiling during the winter months.

There are plenty of boat launch areas, picnic areas and spots to enter the water from. There is a reproduction Cape Cod lighthouse at the northern end of the lake. This is the home of “High Country,” an establishment for boat sales, service and rentals. They rent jet skis, and power boats with all the extras. Across the street is the Green Mountain Flagship Company where one can rent canoes and kayaks or get a lake tour aboard their multi level tour boat which goes out at regularly scheduled times or can be rented for private parties.

The Reservoir is steeped in history. With some cellar holes and chimneys from the flooded town of Mountain Mills still visible to a scuba diver, the lake is used for hydroelectric power. The “Glory Hole” and damn are unique attractions best visited via boat. This lake is also home to the world renowned and infamous “Ledges” (a short hike to a clothes optional sunning and bathing area.)

A twenty minute ride north gets you to the World Class Mount Snow Ski Resort. This area caters to all your winter needs as well as mountain biking needs in the summer. This is also a beautiful area for hosting any conference or reunion needs. Twenty minutes to the east is Brattleboro, to the west is Bennington and south is North Hampton Mass or North Adams Mass.

Come set up your base camp in Southern Vermont, and take advantage of all the area has to offer.
